After spending 7 years working on AAA games I find the smaller development teams at Roadhouse both refreshing and satisfying, even years later! I feel I spend less time either coordinating efforts or in meetings as everyone on the entire team is just near by, touching base is quick and lets me get back to doing what I love, building systems and the content that lives in those systems.
That whole thing about “with great power comes great responsibility” – fewer people per team means fewer specialists. If you feel you can thrive in an environment where you’ll be perpetually learning, it’s a good start. Unity’s our engine of choice, familiarity with it is a huge bonus. Personal projects (especially when made with Unity) can both help develop a broad range of skills and help prepare that sense of responsibility.
At Roadhouse, you get the feeling of an insta-family. So open to new people and personalities along with the sometimes weird and always hilarious times, you can’t help but enjoy yourself when you’re in the studio.
My advice for someone who wants to join Roadhouse is to be open to helping and to be helped. The work that goes on here is successful because everyone keeps an open mind to collaboration.
Unlike other companies Roadhouse is much more people-focused. Everyone is friendly and ready to jump in to help each other when needed. People are motivated to do their best to drive our games forward.
Interested in joining? Have a love for the craft. Have a friendly attitude towards learning. Work on something in your spare time that will make you better, especially if you’re a programmer.
